Another chapter has come to an end here at Clairlea for our winter sport season. The Grade 6 Girls's volleyball team, coached by Ms. Lowen, Mme Cormpilas, and Ms. Vincent, had a very successful regular season, finishing with a 3-1 record. Having experienced volleyball in phys-ed only, the girls were exposed to many new experiences and situations only available in inter-school athletics. The program was a big success and a lot of credit is due to the caoches who spent many a morning and afterschool working to improve the skills of the athletes. Unfortunately, in the quater finals, the team seccumbed in a narrow defeat to Alexander Stirling P.S.. Congratulations goes out to the entire team for a good season.
The grade 8 Girls' volleyball team, the most talented in recent memory, also had a good season. Finishing 3-3 the 8's finshed their regular season 3-1 and had high hopes for the playoffs. However, Agnes McPhail P.S. had a different idea, and ultimately ousted our 8's in the semifinal. Agian, thanks to all of the atletes who came out, practiced hard and honed their skills for the future.
The boys' basketball team had a huge turn around from last year. With 10 returning members that did not win a game last season, the boys finished 1st in their pool and for the first time in 10 years, forced a home playoff game. Unfortunately, once again Agnes McPhail P.S. were our undoing, as the Allstars fell 43-36 in a very close loss to end the season. Despite the loss, the boys demonstrated great sportsmanship in the loss and represented Clairlea with class.
For the first time, the University of Toronto hosted their first annual grade 7/8 indoor track meet. Clairlea brought 13 athletes and were represented very well. The results are as follows: 60m dash - gr 7 boys Lemoy W. 2nd place, gr. 8 girls Lizzie W. 1st place, gr. 8 boys Sourabh S. 3rd place, gr. 8 girls 400m Emily B. 2nd place, gr. 8 boys 400m Brodie W. 2nd place, grade 7 boys 4x200m relay (Calvin T., Sam D., Marcus N., Lemoy W.) 1st place, grade 8 girls 4x200m relay (Sarah H., Jessica S., Lindsay M., Lizzie W.) 1st place, and the grade 8 boys 4x200m relay (Sourabh S., Bosko N., Lukas S., Brodie W.) 1st place. It was a very successful day and our students, once again, represented Clairlea with style and class.
The spring sports picture for Clairlea looks like this, the C.F.H.L. will be starting after March Break, grade 8 co-ed volleyball will be starting next week, and just as the spring brings the sun and warm weather , it also brings track and field season. The action never stops!!!!
